It addresses the complexity of next-generation mobile networks by developing self-configuring, self-optimising and self-healing capabilities within an open RAN architecture. It focuses on three key pillars: creating individual ML algorithms for autonomous network control, integrating them into a unified ML-orchestrator to manage conflicting model outputs, and testing these solutions in real-world O-RAN scenarios across telecom and smart-factory environments.
A proof-of-concept for end-to-end service assurance in virtualised 5G/6G networks. It focuses on fast, accurate diagnosis and prognosis of network performance and user experience, translating insights into SLA-based metrics and enabling automated corrective actions through service orchestration and advanced analytics.
This project developed software to optimise energy consumption in radio access sub-networks (RAN) across 4G and 5G (and future 6G) technologies, irrespective of equipment vendor. The solution, termed “Energy Saver”, enables operators to orchestrate energy-saving functions based on customisable policies, thereby reducing power use while preserving service quality.
The project tackled the complexity of converging many access technologies and simplifying network operations to improve monetisation and customer experience. Across three phases, it delivered: a reference model for converged wired and wireless access (2022); an end-to-end closed-loop assurance system for multiple technologies (2023); and a marketplace-enabled B2B2C model leveraging satellite, SD-WAN and connectivity-as-a-service (2024).
We partnered with VMware by Broadcom at the i14y Lab in Berlin to test and validate its Spectrum Efficiency rApp on VMware’s Centralised RIC. Leveraging AI/ML-driven analytics, the rApp automatically identified “overshooting” and “undershooting” cells and adjusted antenna electrical tilt to optimise cell coverage and spectrum usage.
