The PlugFest
The O-RAN ALLIANCE periodically organises global PlugFests to enable efficient progress of the O-RAN ecosystem as pnart of its mission to make the Radio Access Networks (RAN) open, intelligent, virtualised and fully interoperable.
The collaboration
The Fall ‘23 edition of the O-RAN ALLIANCE Global PlugFest provided the opportunity to Future Connections and VMware by Broadcom to join forces and test, evaluate and verify their solutions in a real lab, the i14y Lab in Berlin:
- VMware made available a platform specifically designed to support and run rApps, the Centralized RIC platform
- Future Connections put forward one of its RIC-based solutions, the Spectrum Efficiency rApp
By running a live execution of the joint solution, the partnership aimed at providing deeper understanding and measurement
of the effects and benefits to the network of the Spectrum Efficiency solution on a RIC platform.
The Spectrum Efficiency rApp solution
Leveraging data analytics and AI/ML, the Spectrum Efficiency rApp optimises cell coverage areas and the radio spectrum utilisation by automatically identifying the overshooting and undershooting cells and by adjusting the electrical tilt of their antennas based on customisable predefined policies.
The live execution of the rApp on the VMware Centralized RIC met fully the initial objectives set:
- It demonstrated improvements in the network performance with a significant reduction of the number of offending cells in the target clusters and the consequent improvement of throughput
- It verified successfully the correct communication between the Spectrum Efficiency rApp and the services from the VMware Centralized RIC
